Flashy chestnut fillies are well known for their fire, and when it comes to this young lady, extra bling just means more to burn. Lani is a chestnut filly in the most blatant of ways - you could paint her any color of the rainbow and everybody would still know she was a redhead underneath. Her incredible heart is evident in everything she does, and she doesn't do anything halfway. She's a loud filly, both vocally and in action, and it's not unusual to hear her squeal as she rears and kicks out in temper. She's got a pretty short fuse, and she can get irritated by a number of things, including being hotwalked too long (in her opinion), not getting fed on time (in her opinion), and being insulted by another horse (you guessed it). She does pretty well in a group outside, but she's definitely a dominant horse. She picks her friends on sort of a weekly basis, and will hog that friend to herself, chasing the others off, right up until she picks a new favorite. Keeping up with her social life is a full-time job, so nobody really bothers. She's a pain under saddle, constantly trying to do her own thing and go her own way, so it's generally best to just find ways to make her think it's her idea. She's very headstrong, but if you work with her rather than against her you can generally get the job done. She's normally fractious in morning works, and the more rambunctious she is, the better you know she feels. It's the same before a race. She shows a lot of energy before races, but it doesn't seem to affect her performance. It's just who she is, and she's not going to let you forget it.

It's hard to know going into the gate which Lani you're going to get - the sharp, commanding filly, or the lazy-early filly who takes a bit to warm up. Either way, it was clear pretty early that whatever she wants to do, you just let her do it or she's going to fight the entire race. More often than not she'll be on the lead, commanding the field and managing the pace with a bit of help from her jockey. If she decides to set back, she can be convinced to creep up on the lead starting just before the final turn. If you ask her for too much too fast, like if you were trying to get her to the lead when she broke badly, you'd never get her to slow down again. But if you ask her to creep up, it doesn't seem to trigger that unstoppable finishing move. Said unstoppable move comes roaring at the top of the stretch regardless of her position, and if she can take that lead and widen it to a boldly definitive victory, she will do so with enthusiasm.
